Location Description: As travelers walk down Ocean Drive, it may occur to them that the street serves as a division between two different worlds – on one side, the sea and beach beckon passersby to a leisurely day in the surf and sun; on the other, a long strip of bars, shops, galleries, and restaurants entice vacationers to spend the day browsing the latest in fashion, art, and gourmet dining. Whichever you choose, you’ll no doubt be struck by the stunning architecture that surrounds you. Many of the buildings are prime examples of pre-WWII modernism, and are characterized by simple geometrical themes, decorative ornamentation, streamlined textures, and bright pastel colors. Art Deco was a movement that used uniquely designed buildings to hint at other art forms popular at the time, such as jazz and swing music. The overall effect is “chic” and distinct from anything you’ve seen before.
