My recent trip to Barcelona was superb. I traveled with family members aging from 26 to 61 years old and we all had a very enjoyable experience. We could not not fault Hotel 1898 in any way. The hotel staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The hotel is very centrally located and within walking distance to most areas of interest. The hotel had great services inluding a roof top pool and lounge area with great views of the city. It's a great place to relax after a busy day around the city.

My wife and I enjoyed our visit to Barcelona. We were first time tourists to the city. The hotel was very good, right on La Ramblas in the centre of the main attractions. The staff were extermely helpful and friendly. We would visit here again.

The Hotel is very lovely and for the location price is right. We had booked 3 rooms at this hotel as a night prior to our cruise from Barcelona and the 2 rooms that I had booked on Venere were not allowed in our rooms until approx. 4p. The one room I had booked on my GDS (I am a travel agent.) was accommodated immediately upon our arrival at 12 noon. Also, be careful ordering a cab even from the hotel unless you know what the fare should be prior to your ride.

A glorious hotel in the bustling centre of Barcelona. Perfect for a weekend shopping or sight-seeing. Spacious, clean rooms with everything you could possibly need. The Spa is an added bonus and massage treatments all reasonably priced. Incredibly helpful staff, even when we had to ask for a hotel doctor to be called! Thoroughly recommended.

1898 was not listed in our trusted Frommer's guide. Thanks to venere, we found it. The location is incomparable. Being on La Ramble made all the difference to us, we were able to walk or catch the subway. I only wish the prices were not so high. This is a function of the weak US$ and that the entire city of Barcelona was packed that week. The roof top pool is a kick- day and night.

Nov 2006 First time staying and it was just beautiful - Centrally located and full of old world glamour. Facilities were amazing... The roof terrace with pool and beds is just stunning - Wrap up warm and lie out and look at the moon over Barcelona Cathedral spire... My only issues would be as follows:- (1) There was no milk provided for the team / coffee making facilities in the room. When I called reception, they said I would have to order off room service - HOWEVER, Room service had a notice that if your order was under €9, they charged a €5 surcharge.... I really didnt want a €10 coffee so gave up! Given the price of the rooms and how luxurious they were, this just seemed a little mean. (2) Breakfast is overpriced at €18 PP. It is lovely but they only offer eggs in the way of a cooked breakfast. (3) Check in is very very slow (But on the positive side, it does give you the opportunity to just drink in the splendour of the reception area). (4) We were mugged while in Barcelona (Not the hotel's fault obviously!!!). We came back to the hotel to check where the local police station was and they were very slow and could offer no suggestions in terms of what we should do. Given that we had just lost €1200 and all of our cards, it would have been nice if we were offered a drink (Just coffee) and offered some support. Instead we were told this was very common in Barcelona and given directions to walk to the local police station... (It was up to me to suggest we write a list of what was taken, use the hotel internet to cancel all cards and order a taxi to police station) - Disappointing... Also - Do not take recommendations for restaurants from the hotel. We got sent to an appallingly overpriced and disappointingly average restaurant (€14 for a cold starter????). Go the restaurant "Attic" opposite. Modern and brilliant value at €60 for dinner for 2 and bottle of wine! Overall though, one of the most beautiful looking

Fantastic hotel in a fantastic location. We particularly liked the rooftop terrace and the indoor spa. Only improvement would be provision of a kettle and milk for drinks in the room.

Great hotel, nicely renovated into a modern style with a classical touch. Only minus was the hard matrass. Would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

The facilities were superb, the service excellent, the rooms very comfortable, the ambience relaxing, the whole experience divine, the bill - expensive. This was our last night in Barcelona so we decided to pamper ourselves and we were not disappointed. The spacious room and quality facilities provided value for money but drinks and food were very expensive and the breakfast,in particular, whilst extensive in choice, was very pricey. Would we stay at the 1898 again? Without a doubt but eat and drink somewhere less expensive.

My wife and daughters used the rooftop pool and bar several times. The pool is smal but adequate since few guests seemed to use it. I used the basement suite of pool, sauna, steam room and gym which was excellent and I found that sometimes I was the only one there. We stayed in a standard room which was a reasonable size and very clean. Quite simply it is the nicest hotel we have stayed at. It really is as good as it looks in the photos and I would certainly stay there again.

Smoking room was requested but there were none available upon arrival. They said they would switch us the following day, but it really wasnt necessary. The hotel is right in the heart of Las Ramblas. Very convenient to the sights. European rooms are not the size of rooms in the states. Rooms were very small by our standards. The room was beautifully decorated though. Nice tray ceiling, deep rich colors. The bath was beautiful. Lots of marble, soaking tub, bidet.

I read on this site that taxi drivers don't know it. That is true. I had to walk about 1/2 mile up La Rambla to get to the hotel. Tell the taxi driver it is across from Le Meridien. Rooms are small by US standards but large enough for a European hotel.

For a vacation/weekend in this is the perfect hotel. It seems brand new, the service is excellent and the standard is 5-star rather than 4. Best of all was the roof area with the pool, the sunbeds and the chairs, tables and sofas(!). Just to top it all the hotel is located in the middle of La Rambla! Recommended!!
